After leaving the Wexlers, we drove to the more modest part of the island where Tanzi Sharpton lived. Her apartment was in a quaint, somewhat worn-down building on Falls Drive.

I knocked on the door, and after a brief wait, Tanzi answered. Her appearance was as bold as the last time I’d seen her at the party—purple spiked hair, heavily made-up eyes, and black lipstick. Her sleeveless shirt showed off muscle definition and tattoos.

“Hi, Tanzi,” I said. “We just have a couple more questions about last night. May we come in?”

With a wary glance, Tanzi stepped aside, allowing us into her small but tidy living room. “What else do you want to know?”

Jace and I sat on her couch while Glo perched on Jace’s shoulder. Tanzi excused herself and carried in a chair from the other room.

“I don’t get a lot of company,” she said by way of explanation.

I crossed my legs and sighed. “We found the threatening notes you left for Mayor Beaumont. They were in his desk wrapped in twine.”

Tanzi’s face hardened, her jaw clenching as she responded with a mix of frustration and righteousness. “Had you never met him before? Because if you had, then you know what a jerk he was!”

Truth was, I didn’t disagree with her…but that didn’t mean he deserved to die.

Tanzi leaned forward in her chair. “He promised the citizens these two new resorts would open immediate jobs for supernaturals and two new contracts for my dad. People believed him and lined up for construction jobs, and my dad bought a truck in anticipation of the increase. Then Green Horizons comes along, brings their own workers and waste management system, and our weak mayor just slinks away… leaving others holding the bag!”

“But it’s not just the mayor you were angry at,” I said. “You’re also angry at Roger Martin for polluting the waters. And you discussed that with Jasper Noland, didn’t you?”

“Maybe.” She shrugged nonchalantly. “I know Jasper because his little sister and I are friends. We graduated together. She and I both feel the same about our waters. We don’t like outsiders coming here and destroying our land and water.” Tanzi crossed her arms over her chest. “My dad didn’t kill Preston Beaumont.”

“But maybe you did?” Jace mused, his tone more inquisitive than accusatory.

She pointed towards the door. “If you’re just going to come here and accuse me of murder, then you can just leave!”

“No one is accusing you of anything,” I said.

She narrowed her gaze at Jace. “That’s not what it sounded like to me.”

“Tell me about the rumor that Preston Beaumont could be your father,” I said. “I’m sure you know what I’m talking about, yes?”

Her nostrils flared. “Of course I know about the rumor! In a stupid, weak moment, my mother slept with the obnoxious lionfish shifter. She told my dad—Todd Sharpton, thank you!—she was pregnant, and the two reconciled.” She leaned in close and narrowed her eyes at me. “Preston Beaumont is not my father.” She leaned back and shrugged.
